Galimotos

Paige Ahlenius

During this workshop, students will learn about and create their own Galimoto, a toy made by children of Africa. The toy that students create will be made from found objects. Students will be presented with a variety of objects and art supplies. Each student will be given a chance to select their items and design their toy. This workshop introduces different mediums and procedures that children can use to create their own toys. The session begins with a reading of Galimoto by Karen Lynn Williams after which students are tasked with using their imagination to create their own toy. This workshop is a great addition to any cultural arts initiative and broadens visual art exposure along the way. Students will gain a greater appreciation and knowledge of children in Africa. Students will also gain a broader sense of different cultures in relation to themselves and their own culture.
