School Tour Program

Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art

The objective of the Kemper Museum’s school tour program is to engage students in discussion about modern and contemporary art and how it relates to students’ education and lives. With advanced input from classroom and art teachers, tour content can be tailored to the groups’ needs. Thematic content, interdisciplinary curriculum connections, vocabulary words, etc. can be integrated into guided (docent-led) tours of Museum special exhibitions and the permanent collection. Free teacher resources related to special exhibitions and/or seasonal teacher workshops also are available throughout the school year to assist educators in preplanning Museum visits.

Arts Partners members with district wide programs are invited and encouraged to schedule a district-wide, pre-visit planning meeting at the Kemper Museum for classroom and art teachers.   Exhibition content, vocabulary, and cross-curricular concepts will be introduced. Arts Partners members receive priority scheduling for booking tours.

Groups of up to 50 students with a minimum of five adult chaperones may be scheduled at one time for a one-hour guided tour. These guided tours highlight aspects of special exhibitions at the Kemper Museum and Missouri or Kansas Fine Arts requirements (in addition aspects of classroom curriculum made by special request by individual teachers). Tours must be booked at least two weeks in advance of the visit date. A tour confirmation and pre-visit teacher materials are mailed to each scheduling group leader.

The Kemper Museum currently has a bus fund program available for the Kansas City, Missouri, Kansas City, Kansas, and Center School Districts.  Inquiries can be directed to Lauren Park at 816.753.6136 or lpark@kemperart.org.
